I just had to intall ffmpeg-php for a graduate project I'm working on and I feel my tribulations are worthy of record. Hopefully some other poor lost soul will find this road map and save a good 20 hours of cyber wondering trying to get ffmpeg to work. Here goes.

Most of the tutorials I found worked but left out some steps that might confuse the layman. I got ffmpeg working on win xp with apache 2, php 4.4.4, and gd 2.something. *you need gd to working for ffmpeg-php to work. Mine was already enabled so I cant help you there. Here 're the steps I took

• 1. Download the windows ffmpeg dlls this link works http://azzerti.free.fr/php_ffmpeg_win32.zip everything else I found was dead, or source code. If you recompile it and get a newer dll please let me know. I'm tired.
• Unzip it, you'll see three dlls: php_ffmpeg_20050123.dll, php_ffmpeg_20050212.dll, php_ffmpeg_20050618.dll. Any one of these will work but the last one doesn't had the togdimage() function enabled. If you need that function use one of the first two.
• Copy one of these dlls to your php extensions directory i.e. C:\php\extensions and rename it to php_ffmpeg.dll
• Open your php ini (in the windows folder) add extension=php_ffmpeg.dll. Note bellow php_gd2 is uncommented as well. If its not or isn't in your ini at all you need to get that working. Mine looked like this when it was said and done .

• Copy the avcodec.dll and avformat.dll to C:\WINDOWS\system32
• Restart apache and you should be good to go
• One last remark, I never could get the getframe() function to act right with .avi files it always gets the last frame. It also blows up if you pass it 0.
